Owl Get Well Interactive Ecard

In this interactive ecard, an owl visits a magic tea tree to collect healing tea for his friend owl. The magic tea tree is interactive, and little surprises pop out of the teacups when they are clicked. Clicking either the purple teapot or the cup with a heart on it will make the owl collect the cup that has just been filled with rainbow tea, and take it back to his owl friend. The message at the end of this get well ecard reads, “Hope you feel owl better soon.”

Get Well Owl Interactive EcardOne aspect of interactive ecards that I am still pondering, is how to make it obvious when the viewer needs to click on something. On one hand, I don’t want to spoil the scene by having ‘click here’ text popping up constantly. But I don’t want the viewer to be completely unaware that they need to interact with the ecard, either. In this owl interactive ecard, I put a small blinking arrow in the first scene to indicate that the viewer should click on the owl. In the next scene, however, there is no indication to click until you rollover the teacups. And unfortunately, if you happen to click on the purple teapot or the heart cup first, you will miss the other little surprises of the tea tree. Ah well, guess some viewers will have to play it again to find all the surprises! But I will definitely be experimenting with this in future interactive ecards.

Interactive Ecards

I have been wanting to make some interactive ecards lately. In fact, I already made one. I just need to finish the music and sound effects for it. It has a ‘mini-game’ style to it where you have to collect some good things and avoid some bad things. I’m not sure if I’ll make more like this. I like the idea of clicking to explore and advance the animation. Or just clicking to reveal special effects, maybe on an interactive bouquet or a creature.

The problem is my imagination is always ten steps ahead of what I’m able to create in a reasonable amount of time. My animation skills are actually quite rudimentary so it makes it difficult. A lot of ideas I have had to just let go because they are too difficult to animate in a way that actually looks decent. But I’m also able to work around a lot of the difficulties (hence the rabbits hopping behind bushes) or just simplify my concepts.

The interactive ecards make music trickier as well, since it has to be a loop. That is part of the difficulty I am having in completing the music for my first interactive ecard. I set it aside after my first attempt, but I am going to finish it very soon. And then I’ll work on creating the parade of interactive ecards that is dancing through my mind.
